Hi,
Great to be back on the forum after a bit of time away.
I have been having trouble with my electric starter on my 2004 , 65 , press the button very slow to fire up. Today pressed it and smoke come from the starter m area , and it fired up. Went for short ride stopped it fired it up again this time no probs. Then went for a long run. On my return after a short rest pressed the button and nothing at all no noise or power to button. I kicked it over and she fired up but nothing from electric starter . Any ideas ?

13 year old starter motor burnt out, possibly? Or the associated wiring? Check the wire from the solenoid to the motor and the solenoid too. A.

I suffered a spit back a while ago which took out the sprag clutch. Because it also wore out the gears as well, which meant a massive cost to replace, I removed the starter motor and assosiated gubbins and put it on my shelf in the garage. I have since erredicated the spitback by slightly retarding the Boyer ignition and now have first kick starts, no spit back, and better pulling up hills in top gear. Shame I didn't do that before the starter went, and I wouldn't have as many "ornaments" in the garage!

So I have been kicking her over no probs, would there be or would,it cause a problem by leaving the starter motor in but just carry on kicking her over ?

Think you'll be fine just kicking it over, doesn't sound like a sprag clutch problem..

However i would be tempted to locate the electrical fault and isolate, if not repair.

If switches, solenoid and wiring check out ok, then just isolate starter motor to prevent any short/fire...

What a plonker Rodney. Sorted it , pulled clutch in pressed button and fired up.

I was unaware that. You had to do this .

So whats this about smoke from the starter area? Maybe exhaust to head joint needs looking at, any soot deposits on pipe?

Never thought about clutch switch..doh.

First time i tried mine after buying i thought the blasted headlight didn't work, that is till i started the engine...
