Back in the late sixties a couple of mates with cafe racers,(88 Dominator and Triton) had chrome coil springs wound onto the swept back header pipes..
I'm sure they where a "must have" cafe race accessary, like bacon slicers, clip ons and rear sets..
Just darned if i can find any picture as evidence now, think they helped transfer heat and aid cooling of the pipe where it left the head around the first bend..
As per Leon, retard timing and lean mixture will blue the pipe within a few miles, get the settings right and the pipe takes on a straw colour which can be cleaned off easy with something like Belgom chrome, stuff which seems to have been around since chrome was first put on bikes...
