So, back to Enfields with a Lightning 535. As it has obviously been standing for a while, there are many jobs to do. I'm sure it still has the original Indian tyres. On the plus side it has Boyer ignition, a disc front brake (probably with original fluid), a long MOT, and less than 10,000 km.

One of the jobs will be to find out why the high beam warning light doesn't work. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to gain access? It's not immediately obvious (to me, anyway). Not a huge problem but I might want to get in there to replace other bulbs some day.

I can see why the neutral light doesn't work. Presumably that big bolt sticking out of the back of the gearbox, surrounded by JB Weld is where the neutral light switch used to sit. That's one for the future, but I would be interested to know whether 170180 is the right part number.

Thanks in advance, Howard.

The easiest way to gain access to the instrument pod is to unbolt it from the upper yolk. It's easy enough to do with the headlamp in place. You'll have to remove the headlamp lens as you'll need access to the loom that's inside. I've had the instrument pod off several times from my 500 lightning. It's a simple job. Just two bolts holds it on.

Thanks Barry, I see the two bolts. So once it's unbolted it becomes easier to see what you're doing?

Just found out why the indicators on one side were flashing too slowly - a 5w bulb was in the front one.

Yeah. I think that they're 10mm bolts. Just take them out and the pod will come away. There'll be enough slack in the cables for you to access the bulb holders. The bulb holders are made from rubber and will pull out (If the rubber hasn't welded itself to the plastic moulding). Be warned though. The wiring on the Lightning is a bit dodgy. The sheathing goes hard and the wires end up breaking. I've already had to fix my loom a couple of times. Currently, my tacho doesn't work and I can't find the break in the wire!

Howard,

It could be worth your while tracking down a copy of the factory "Combined Spare Parts Catalogue Retired Models" (December 2013 update) as your Lightning is a home market model. I checked the number you quoted and yes, that is the neutral switch on 4 speed boxes where fitted.

.

Also Henry Price of Price Part Motorcycles is well up on these bikes and might be able to help if our hosts don't have a specific home market part, though they do have odd useful stuff tucked away that doesn't always get listed.

+1 to Barry_Q on the wiring, this affects UK models too, unfortunately.

Thanks Adrian, I just found the catalogue on line and it looks incredibly useful.

The wiring seems to be based on the 'keep your fingers crossed it wont chafe on that sharp bracket' principle anyway. At least this model doesn't have that mess of wires and bullet connectors behind the nacelle that rubs and pulls against the steering head!
