So on my way to work the other day the small bit of metal holding the seat springs to the front of the saddle gave up, dropping me down quite hard onto the plastic electrics cover.
Since then the bike developed a dreadful misfire and now won't start, kicking back very hard, way before the kick starter gets all the way to the bottom of it's swing.

Any ideas as to why this could be???

Check the connector blocks under the electrics cover. (It isn't obvious pull them apart and click them back together.)

so pulled out all the connections, cleaned and put back together and checked for any shorts, still nearly shoots me over the seat when I try and start it!

Konrad, what model and year is the bike? EFI or carbed..

Much info as possible please.. Any obvious damage to battery or earthing wires?

If you have a boyer ignition system fitted I would check battery voltage if its low unit advances and kicks back ankle breaking style.

Have you fixed it yet. I presume it's not electric start. If it has normal points ignition the only reason for kickback is too much advance or very lean mixture. How this could happen with the seat breaking is a mystery. Maybe it's one of those Enfield coincidence things. Pull the carby apart. Maybe the clip fell off the needle. Don't keep us in suspenders.
