The only other possible source of 'plastic' that I can think of is the polymer material used for the crank shaft bearing cage...

Oil changed by previous owner.... are we 100% sure the oil itself came straight from the tin and was clean and free from maggots? (Can't imagine why, but ...)

Yep. oil changes all done by me and I didn't add any fly babies.
the "maggots" are all hard and could very easily have been the plastic teeth off a worn gear wheel as they were regular in size and whiteish.
I am really pleased that I haven't been running for the last 1000m with a failing oil pump!
