Hello all, I am currently putting back together my 2008 electra x and I considering put the starter motor and sprag gear on as it came dissasembled in a box when I bought the bike. I have been reading previous posts about all the problems concerning the sprag bearing problem and know many will think that I am mad to even consider putting it back on the bike. I am going to retard the ignition a few degrees with one of Hitchcocks off set woodruff keys and will try using the valvelifter when starting [with no throttle!}and stopping and have my fingers and toes crossed.
Anyway this is my question
It looks to me that the sprag bearing can fit into the driven gear either way round. Then when the DRIVING gear is then put into position it will lock when turned clockwise or lock anticlock wise depending upon which way i have the bearing in. So with the driven gear flat on a work bench with sprag and driving gear in place which direction should the driving gear lock?
Thanks

thanks papasmurf [by the way are you Terry the rock and roll dj in the Durham are aka papasmurf?]
That video is not on a electra x and to be honest I am stuggling to work out the answer to my question from it but will sit and mull it over. In the meantime further ideas most welcome

Why break it when it ain't fixed (fixed to the bike that is!)

Oh heck... Try it. You might have found the golden grail method, let us know how it goes!

Assemble the clutch driving gear assembly onto the clutch driven gear with the sprag clutch, by rotating in an anti clockwise direction..

The clutch DRIVING gear assembly should freely rotate in an anticlockwise rotation..

So it says in my Indian manual..

Mark58, it does not matter which model of RE the sprag is fitted to the directional instructions are the same.
The other problem is where the sprag bearing is made when it comes to fitting a replacement.
Unless things have changed I don't think our hosts currently list a new sprag.
However European made sprags are available. (I believe one such is fitted to a Borg Warner 35 automatic gearbox.)
