The Humber ferry boats were lovely side paddle steamers. I've spent many a happy hour stuck on sandbanks in the middle of the estuary on them. They ended the sailings on the very day that the Humber bridge opened though a couple of the last boats survive elsewhere in the country.

BR ran an evening commuter service for a week or so out of Waterloo in the mid 90's hauled by a Merchant Navy. There was also a steam hauled evening commuter service down the Brighton line from Victoria around the same time hauled by a Black 5 and a Merchant Navy on one of the evenings. These were immediately prior to the so-called privatisation.

True, I think the Waterloo service was a re-creation of the Royal Wessex service, probably using Clan Line, I don't think there were any other preserved MN's running with a main line certificate at the time. Perhaps this and the Brighton runs don't really qualify as BR had to call in the privately-owned locomotives that they had sold off to enthusiasts or to Dai Woodham (for scrap!) years before.
