Thanks Scallyback. Great piece of nostalgia and I recognise several parts of Liverpool, my home town, that have changed a lot. Horsmans ended up as a Renault dealer in the 80s I believe and are sadly no more.

What a hoot! Make you realize how vastly motoring has changed in the last fifty years. Can't remember seeing an old boy try to crank start a car for quite a while. Cheers and thanks for a good post.

I would not have the nerve to crank that. It was worrying enough, the first time I started my restored lister engine!

Ive cranked a lot of cars over the years, Bradford van with 1000cc Jowett flat twin regularly had too little power in the six volt battery. The technique I was taught at an early age was always pull up on the compression stroke so that the crank handle will pull out of you hand rather than smash it out of the way in event of a backfire. Never had a crack at a 28 ltr Fiat though!

Gosh Simon, memories of our beloved Bradford come flooding back. I wish you had been round in 1953, your advice could have saved Dad a broken wrist!
