Yes Jeff's so are the others, the fuel pump would still run for a short time at switch on until the internal pressure switch stopped it.

The first post after the OP suggested what turned out to be the correct diagnosis, so well done to Tim NZ. I hadn't appreciated that the fuel pump itself was a known dodgy item, though bunged up filters and poor connections/fuses/ relays etc are often at fault and cause all sorts of issues. I'm glad that removal of the EFI and substitution of a carb eliminates another potential cause of engine malfunction that cannot be fixed at the roadside.
