Just tried our hosts' experimental direct download system for parts orders and it works a treat...

Sorry to hear that Adrian. I have to say PF do a pretty good job here, in fact if I've ordered a large parcel's worth I dread it because the driver comes out to our village as his first drop of the day and I see his cheery mug at 7.15 or earlier! If I've done an order my wife says "no lie in for me..."! (By the way a friend of mine worked at a large firm where they referred to PF as ParcelFarce but that's going too far...?)

Normally PF is fine, but yesterday they decided to try delivering to the same house number as mine on a different street and left it with that person's neighbour when, surprisingly, I wasn't there! Fortunately it wasn't far away and I managed to get the parcel OK.



The title is a gentle dig at the web site's habit of leaving sold items' description and picture on the used item pages after they have been sold instead of simply removing them. So if you look here http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/frames-forks and scroll to the fifth item down there is the damaged Interceptor fork yoke I purchased, but with no indication of when the next batch of damaged used Interceptor fork yokes is due in!

I have no beef with our hosts. Anything I ever ordered was quickly sent and recieved.

That said, the 'Currently unavailable' tag is not very helpful in itself. What would be nice, is to know when they WILL be available. I realise the problems in supply chain management, I had to deal with that for years before my retirement, but if something becomes permanently unavailable it should be removed from the listing.

Agreed about "currently unavailable". I did recently have a discussion with Allan when I returned something that didn't fit, he said you've had it a long time to which I replied that often during a long rebuild you have to buy parts when they're available as you've no idea if they will be back in stock when you need them! A "new stock in 3 months" (say) category description would help. Obviously there will be some items that are of such rarity/scarcity/limited application that once any new old stock items are used up there just won't be enough demand to justify Allan commissioning new ones, which could be another "availability" category? By the way, I do think the stock and supply from our Hosts is superb, likewise the excellent help with enquiries over the phone, often someone has gone off to the stores to check dimensions or other specifications on parts just to help a customer, even when a sale probably won't result.

I was almost luckier. I wanted a nylon cog for Kenny the food mixer. A friend in the USA said he could send me the file for the cog, just send it to my 3D printer. Unfortunately, I don't have a 3D printer, otherwise I could have downloaded my cog!

How technology progresses!

I suppose you could 3D print an Electra-X crank pin or cam follower, couldn't be worse than a 2005 original...



Seriously, this technology will progress, and I can see it having a use for non-critical components, but for engine internals subjected to wear, stress, heat and oil, etc, choice of ink (OK, print medium or whatever) will probably rule these out for a good while yet. If someone knows different, a link to the relevant info will no doubt be appreciated.
