Thanks for responding, Reoc have advised that the frame is 1949 (aoriginally a G2) and the engine is 1954, on browsing the Hitchcocks parts diagrams so are some of the cycle parts. I want to do the refurb myself (never done one before), it's not run for a number of years but turns freely , the chrome is shot & a local firm advised buying new where possible as rechroming is expensive and sometimes not as good as the original finish. If anyone has experience of good painters etc in the Manchester area please let me know. Thanks

If you are looking for a useful powder coating company look up Chicago Coatings in Mosley near Oldham. They have done full frames and assorted brackets etc for me and my mate and their workmanship is good, more importantly they have never lost any parts. They are used to motorcycle bits having done a CX500, two Velos, Guzzi Monza, Bullet and will shortly be entrusted with my BMW R100 RT bits. Don't be put off by their premises in an old mill, these guys know what they are doing. Usual disclaimer- I have no relationship with them other than as a happy customer. Ian

I can’t help with technical stuff but I can pass on some advice I saw recently. If you are not experienced in nut and bolt restorations - DON’T PULL THE BIKE APART COMPLETELY ON DAY ONE. You run the risk of ending up with a heap of parts and nuts and bolts on the bench not knowing what goes where, the road to hell IS paved with good intentions. Start by, say, engine out, carb off and refurb the carb, wrap it up nicely and put it on the shelf, next, mag off, refurb, wrap then put it on the shelf, maybe top end next etc. etc. This way you end up assembling refurbed, repainted ‘major’ components. Obviously some tasks can overlap like wheels and frame can be done while the mag is off to a specialist. Good advice above especially Nigel, taking piccies and record everything will make life easier.

Forgot to mention, take piccies on your phone and email them to yourself IMMEDIATELY with an explanation. Don’t wait till you go indoors, have a beer, watch East Enders, have another beer, maybe get propositioned, oh bugger it, I’ll do it tomorrow…. You might forget stuff.

The number one rule before starting any restoration and stripping the bike is to take as many photo's as you can. You may think you'll remember something but a year down the line you'll be saying, now did that go this way or that. Also join your local club they will be able to tell you the best places to get things done. Another tip is to do as much yourself as you can otherwise you could end up paying out more than the bikes worth
