350cc/4-speed iron barrel. After undoing the two connections and pulling out the bulb does the ammeter simply push upwards out of the casquette? Is it better to push it out of the casquette and then undo the terminals? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi SB, should just push up in theory, it is very tight though.. perhaps a splash of WD40 and a good waggle should help...

Wouldn't try pulling the wires up through to disconnect as least disturbance the better.... gwilly.

Couldn't get one out recently, had to totally destroy it before it would move

I used a length of dowel and gently tapped around the rim of the instrument's case from below. Care is needed because the case is made from very soft aluminium and easily deformed. Once stripped though, and using the same dowel on the inside, it's easy to return it to (more or less) its original shape.

--------- the rubber grommet is the same size for the ignition key...As per GWILLY I use some WD40 around the top aided by very gentle leverage "tweeks" with a small, flat-bladed screwdriver... Once the oil has penetrated all round it comes out quite easily..Insertion is helped with a little bit of washing up liquid..I personally recommend FAIRY LIQUID as it's kept my hands silky-soft down the years PLUS}--- it does far more plates than it's nearest rival ever can, so there !!!..( NO, TV adverts have NOT influenced my life-style in any way !! )....Play this now}---- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZMZ-XvvzI -----------------

I used talcum powder to re-insert mine. Worked a treat (and smells lovely.)

I was thinking a dab of washing-up liquid -- a la fitting handlebar grips -- but might try talcum powder, which is a new one to me. To think: all this effort to save a few quid on a Lucas-lookalike!

Regarding the electrical aspect of ammeter removal, is the bike wired such that simply disconnecting the plug is sufficient or does the connector need shorted?

Disconnecting the ammeter will break the circuit and you will need to short the two connection.
