I note in the manual I have for my Electra X(ish) it states clean the "oil strainer" as part of a service.
I can find no such component in the workshop manual or in the parts diagrams for a 2006 Electra on this website. Can anyone help?

There's a gauze strainer hidden inside the 'catch can'.

There's a gauze strainer hidden inside the 'catch can'. Referred to as the breather assembly, Part No. 521240

Papasmurf, I think the plug at the front underside of the crankcase might be the culprit - one of the pair with integral gauze filters, the other one being located at the underside of the 'oil tank'. Regards, Paul.

Ric I am still trying to work out how to remove the catch can to clean it without taking a lot of things off first to find the nut holding it on.

I think the seat might have to come off ...

Yes, seat has to come off and the battery carrier if I remember. I ditched the catch can years ago.

Most people did ditch them with good reason as I recall, but with a little reconfiguration the catch can oil loss can be reduced. This is what collected from the 'drain' tube after 3,600 miles.

Just can't recall exactly what I did, If I find my post on the Bulleteer's forum I'll update this one.

"Do away with the catch can altogether, just block of the pipe draining back into the timing cover, fit a one way valve on the breather pipe coming from engine, and let the breather pipe from primary just breathe to the air.

The Electra X when doing this hardly sends out any oil through the breather, just a bit of mayo in the cold wet weather. with the correct valve the crankcase works in a vacuum the way it should.

Fitted this mod to lots of these engines and it just works."
