PeteF, because the mechanic who usually services all our motorcycles loses the will to live whenever he does anything to the Enfield, I am going to slowly over the next week or so, (I am disabled) carry a service myself and add the oil "trap" to the list. (I am still in the process of making a right-hand side stand as well.)

...............anyway anybody got ideas about worthwhile improvements to the engine? I have to do some work to put back the decompressor top hat I removed in another rebuild and forgot to replace... long story.

The reason oil is PUMPED out of the engine breather (and into the air filter) is due to poorly routed breather pipes.
The main breather vent pipe of the top of the oil tank can not have ANY dips or kinks in it or condensate sludge accumulates in the pipe. Then starts to 'Pack-Off' and the motors net internal pressure increases. Oil mist begins to settle in the pipe, and next the slug of elephant snot and oil is finally blow clear; into the catch-can and or the air filter and or Primary chain-case, and or the timing case...

The catch can fills and the gloop spewed out of the breather pipe TRIES to drain back into the timing case, the other smaller dia drain from the catch-can cause the primary chain case to slowly fill with oil. Then the path of least resistance is into the airfilter.

If you want a detailed explanation and instructions on how to fix, email me on: royalenfield AT clear DOT net DOT nz

I will send you a Word doc with all the info; simple and easy to rectify and no cost involved.

One of the weakness of the Electra-X engine is the use of cam followers with thinner diameter stems than on the traditional Bullet, those fitted to the Electra-X can snap where the foot joins on. Bullet Whisper is building a replacement Electra-X engine for me out of spares and has adapted some decent cam followers and guides to fit the crankcases.

While you have the engine apart you might be able to reinstate the older-style Bullet breather system from the left hand crankcase which is generally reckoned to be a better set-up than the Electra's - see Tim's post above..

Also, European or Japanese main bearings instead of the OEM versions, and possibly consider fixed cam spindles instead of the adjustable versions fitted.
