I went for a ride yesterday on my 1946 model G which was fully restored 8 months and 500 miles ago.

I noticed a noise coming from the timing case area near my left foot this was not continuous and only now and then. It was like a knocking , rattling noise like a loose chain . I stopped and checked my main chain but that was tight. I carried on my journey home it happened now and then. Again like knocking grinding noise then it stopped.

I got home ok with no more noises.

Any ideas?

Hi, REDS. I hope by tight you mean at the correct amount of free play? If it really is tight, then you will be putting enormous strain on your transmission, which would explain the noise. Hope I am wrong..... Best REgards, Chris.

Hi, your primary chain maybe loose and hitting the case. Sometimes the gearbox is pulled forward if the adjusters are not set correctly. Vince

Hello Reds, it may be too your crankshaft that grinds the crankcase, as at contrary of Bullets, it is a "floating" one, as it is not tightened on the driving side. If the timing side flywheel thrust washer is too slim, at one moment will the crank have some contact with the case. That should explain why the noise comes and goes. I've seen that on one engine I got. That's the reason (among a lot of other ones) why I threw away the caged rollers system and fitted real bearings. Have a look by there if you don't see marks on the inside of the case. Hope it will help you. Claude
