Can somebody explain to me the basics of wiring up a horn? I'm trying to sort out the wiring on on my 1989 350. I have traced the wire that comes from the horn button, and connected it to the one that seems to go to the horn. It doesn't work ! The horn itself works okay when tested. The button seems to break, rather than make, a connection when pushed. Is this normal? Applying a current to the wire which leads from the nacelle to the horn does not seem to cause the horn to sound. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here?

I can only explain the basics John as you've not said what colours the wires are..

Most of the older models seem to be Blue and yellow. The blue wire comes from the ammeter and feeds the horn permanent live 12VDC when the ignition is turned on..

The yellow goes from the horn to the switch and when the button is pressed should make a connection between switch and earth/frame, thus horn sounds..

Check terminal numbers 13 and 14 on left hand switch gear for 12 volts DC with button pushed..
May be a duff switch or earth to frame wire..

Thanks Gwilly. There is a yellow lead from the horn push (this is a Minda replacement for the original). There is an orange lead which has four spade connectors, two of which go onto the horn and which ends in a ring connector which I assume to be an earth. it joins the loom at the top and i believe it emerges in the casquette, though I haven't established continuity. there is just one wire going down to the horned that's all there ever was; according to your description. it sounds as if there should be a wire going down to the horn and another returning running up to the button.

Thanks both, that's what I've got wired up now and it works. The strange thing is that I'm sure it originally had a live feed from the button going to an earth, rather than vice versa.
