I just installed the Boyer electronic ignition. I get the engine running, and it runs nicely BUT I have a huge problem finding how I have to position the piston for kickstarting. Before I could see this with the ammeter, but this is no longer working. Is it like that ? If so, then electronic ignition is a big step backwards for me, and I will consider removing it. There must be several here using this electronic ignition. How do you find that spot just past TDC ?

Hi Nico, Probably not much help and I am probably in the minority here, but I turn the engine onto compression first and then give it a boot, never fails for me. Regards, Paul.

Nico I have Boyer on my 2002 500 Bullet, I take it up to Tdc on compression stroke use decompresser to take over and end up with kick start position about 9 o'clock return kickstart to normal position crack the throttle slightly and give a nice swing usually starts first time. If it's from cold I tickle the carb a couple of times (Amal Monobloc) then same procedure.

I can only echo what SteveT said. Mine's a '92 350 with Boyer and bigger Mikcarb, and I do the same as him. Works fine for me.

The engine runs nicely, but I was horribly irritated that I took ten minutes to start it. With points I mostly started my Bullet after one kick.
It is now a bit better. Good tip about the nine o'clock. I will just exercise until I learn it.

Nico, I just fitted the same system. Unless you have used a strobe and degree disk there is no way you can get the ignition timing spot on using the instructions provided. I had to tweak the timing about six times before it felt right.
As far as finding the "just over tdc point, you'll soon get the hang of it. Just up to compression, decompress, move lever about three inches, close decompressed and give it the boot.
Having said that, I now use Paul's method, kick right through from compression.

Hi Pete,
Yes I just followed the instructions. Used a dial gauge, and afterwards moved the plate with the coils halfway. A bit crude.
I will do the timing with stroboscope and round timing gauge tomorrow.
The engine starts well and runs well, but it probably can be better.

what are your first impressions of the Boyer electronic ignition ?

I still have to set the timing with a stroboscope, but what I have found is that the Bullet rains better at tickover.
Previously my Bullet easily stopped running at tickover. That is no longer the case. Maybe the spark is better ? Well,
tonight I will tune with the stroboscope and the circular dial. Curious what the effect will be.
