Gwilly, they BOTH retard the ignition at start-up, or should do!

The green TCI box is the later version with the spark DELAY, developed as an answer to the original black box TCI causing the kicking back on start up. As far as I know both use a the same electronic advance and retard curve, the spark delay version is intended to let the engine spin up to a decent cranking speed. The sudden load on the electrical system caused by the electric starter can cause a voltage drop. It sounds like the original black TCI would behave in the same way as a Boyer Bransden Mk3 on an electric start Norton Commando and go fully advanced if the battery output was less than perfect. Crunch bang.

I quote from Paul Goff's web site for the Pazon Sure Fire ignition here:

"The Pazon Sure Fire system has several advantages over the Boyer unit.

It will start the bike even if the battery Voltage is low, down to 8 Volts. The Boyer unit goes full advance at anything under 10 Volts resulting in spitting through the carb or violently kicking back.

Very useful on a Mk3 Commando preventing backfiring destroying the sprag clutch drive from the starter motor."

As an interim measure Watsonain-Squire, the previous UK RE importers, came up with a separate spark delay module prior to the green TCI boxes being made available, many as FOC replacements.

Apart from getting your carb set up, the other major factor in a successful E/S Electra is having a decent battery, my OEM version and its first lead-acid replacement weren't up to the job, use a Motobatt 14AH AGM battery or similar if you haven't already got one.

Delay yes thats the word, not retard.. Coping with 30 centigrade in Crete at mo that's my excuse.
Off down for a beer at a little taverna on the shore. Watch the sun go down.

Adrian, you will be pleased to hear that someone actually takes your advice and YES, I bought a Mototblatt as per your suggestion a few months back and it is a much better battery than the cheap rubbish on the bike I inherited. I hate the yellow, but it has the power! I would have bought the green TCI but I understand it is not available from our hosts - any suggestions?

I should add, sorry for tardy reply but been touring Perthshire since Friday morning on the '08 iron barrel, 4 gallon tank, 50s styled, and attended big classic gathering in St Fillans, and there were 10 Enfields - I am convinced they are catching on

I would give our hosts a ring and ask **exactly** what they have in stock. Note they list the separate spark delay module for older black TCI boxes if they have no green TCIs in stock..

There was a green TCI box on sale in the used parts section here, but as it's showing as currently unavailable someone has bought it, not much help I know! As fas as I'm aware it it the "performance" TCI box which they no longer sell.

What you can get is a pattern GS125 Suzuki TCI box off ebay (confusingly mis-labelled a CDI box), though someone on the US forum bought one and couldn't get it to work properly (wiring issue?). They're quite cheap (and come with a coil) if you want to buy one to experiment with, but they of course DON'T have the spark delay.

Amazed to think anyone might listen to my advice...
