"hone the right way round". , Kindly explain?. Any engineering workshop worth using will bore to the piston, is there any other way?. Not all pistons have a front and back but when refitting it is best to put it back the same way as it came out.

Honing can be done more than one way - by running the piston up and down the new bore by hand with a twisting action using a thin slurry of lapping paste to ease it in, before fitting the rings. Once you decide which way round the piston goes, stick to that.

Jefrs you don't decide which way a piston goes the top of the piston is marked.

The method you describe for lapping pistons is new to me.
Have you done this and what sort of results did you get?
I would have thought that, as there is a gap between the piston and bore, then lapping like this would have no effect but to ruin the piston.
Lapping as you describe is often done with model engines that have no rings. Perhaps this is what you where thinking about?

Of course, non original pistons might not be so marked. Thinking back though, I can't remember a piston without some marking to tell you which way round it should be.
