Thank you PeteF!

I had earlier found a table showing the conversion between two different inch size spanners, which led me to believe that any "English" set would work, but just have the wrong size markings, but apparently this was a table to convert between BSW and BSF only.

After seeing your message just now, I've found a different table which is more informative to the problem: http://classicmechanic.blogspot.be/2011 ... chart.html

The spanner set I ordered yesterday looks like it is indeed AF. I've messaged the shop I've ordered it from, to cancel that part of my order.

By searching for "Whitworth" I'm finding a number of (more specialized) shops in Belgium and the Netherlands which do sell the proper spanners and sockets, so I'll be looking there instead (and on ebay as well, although shipping to Belgium often kills that option.)

Thanks again!

Yes, the Whitworth quoted size is always less than the BSF quoted size. There must have been a reason once upon a time.
Personally I love the idiosyncratic nature of the Imperial system. It's not as easily understood as the metric of course but much more fun.
Just imagine what it was like before Mr Whitworth's standardisation with every manufacturer having different spanners/TPI/thread angle/head size.

I've just remembered a dodge we used to use in the old days when we couldn't afford all the right spanners.
Take the next biggest spanner you have, jam a screwdriver in the jaws as well and with luck it will get the nut off.
Not recommended of course but it got me out of a hole on many occasions and better than the dreaded Mole grips.

The 'Spannerium'. Everything from the small 1/8" to the mind blowing 1" personal weapon spanner. All Whitworth (and BSF) and in France! They can shove their cuntimeters where it hurts, hoorah!

Sorry, I meant Centimetres. That learning predictive spelling really has me down to a tee apparently.
