Yeah well, I've had this MIL lamp flash and the engine cutting out. Only problem was the MIL lamp flashed up and the engine coughed, did it a few more times and then the engine died completely no restart. Test Pin gave no codes because - what had happened was one of the bulbs in the MIL cluster had blown and somehow shorted the supply which blew the other two bulbs and blew the fuse - so the ECU was dead. Root cause dodgy ill-fitting bulbs and on inspection corroded fuses; changed the lot, sorted.
The other problem I had did not light the MIL but did cause juddering, the motor was missing because the plug had fouled. But this was traced to a fault on the HT side, HT cap not properly connected to HT lead, not the plug's fault.
Other issue that may be relevant is the battery -ve terminal connector is a thin strip of metal. That snapped clean across the bend in it. That connects to a thin black wire which I'm pretty sure was the ECU ground. I simply re-fashioned the connectoid, sorted. An intermittent battery connection would fritz the ECU.
The ECU is fed from a relay and a fuse, also that ground wire. The spade connectors are well crimped onto the wires but made from too-thin metal, this is a weak point. The fuses are aluminium, this corrodes. Most of, if not all, the oem light bulbs are poor quality and ill-fitting in their sockets.
So do check all the electrical connectors, relays, fuses and bulbs. Before throwing money at it.
