There shouldn't be ANY apparent movement up and down on the big end (a little side to side is acceptable)
Really, if your having someone rebuild the crank, why not get them to split the cases as well. They will have the tools and know-how leaving you the simpler jobs of the top end.
Oh, and next time - stuff a rag in the crankcase mouth!
