There shouldn't be ANY apparent movement up and down on the big end (a little side to side is acceptable)
Really, if your having someone rebuild the crank, why not get them to split the cases as well. They will have the tools and know-how leaving you the simpler jobs of the top end.

Oh, and next time - stuff a rag in the crankcase mouth! )

Will start the drive side soon and may struggle to remove the clutch and alternator hubs Phil plus the sprockets? Do they both need special pullers? I do have some 3 leg and bearing pullers so I'll see what I find once I get started. Can I remove the engine and box now easily or is it a pig to remove? I can see the top and front bolts plus one connected under the gearbox so does that mean the lump has to be lifted up and over the pegs and stand frame at the back? Harvey

It makes sense to remove as much as you can before removing the engine and gearbox from the frame. Engine and gearbox removal is still a lot easier if you have an assistant - it's quite a lump.

I lifted my lump out with a small trolley jack - easy-peasy!

If you are lucky you can remove head barrel and piston front engine plates and undo gearbox nuts move eng forward and gearbox back , you can then remove 4 gearbox studs with thinslipjoint pliers and wangle the motor out bit fiddley but we, ve done it easy to put gearbox on and put it all back

No tools needed Phil it all fell apart ok but you are welcome to have a ride over my way if you wish to meet up.

It came out ok and I did put a jack under it for support although it wouldn't drop low enough so I twisted the lump around. I hadn't realised the plates holding the main stand all came apart? The bike is leaning on axle stands now and very light!! Now for the expensive bit buying new shiny bits from our host. May go for 535 option but need to seek more advice as some seem to struggle to get the bikes running well after upgrading?
Hitchcock's uk cranks look great but boy what a price? Have any of you fitted them and do they make the bike run differently? Same goes for the roller crank option? Harvey
