Hi all I have another Enfield in my collection this time a non running electra x with the Hitchcocks power kit fitted. Looks like someone has had the carburettor apart and forgot to fit the pilot jet. I also think they have changed and adjusted things to try to overcome this do I gave no idea what the standard jets and settings are including slide etc. Anyone know so I can get back to a good starting point? Thanks

Most Mk1 Amals don't have a detachable pilot jet, they have a drilled brass bush pressed into one of the internal passage ways, it can be very hard to get at to clean if it gets blocked. I think the current manufacturers of the Mk1 now offer a version with proper detachable jet. A.

The carb has a fixed pilot bushing deep in behind the Air adjustment screw, very hard to get at if or when it blocks.

You will also need to verify that the pilot by-pass and pilot outlet orifices in the floor of the carb body are clear?

Remove the pilot air screw and apply a blast of compressed air, it should be felt coming out of the two wee holes...

IF they are blocked apply carb cleaner, OR if you have a set of Gas welding tip-cleaners, use the smallest 'REAMER' to carefully probe the bushing and or orifices. DONT get carried away or you will permanently damage the outlets and the bushing. (New body time...)

Thanks that's exactly how I set it but still had running issues. I fitted a 30 pilot jet I had in my shed to the threaded hole in the carb body and now idles but still a little rich and very fluffy when first opening the throttle. I was going to lean the pilot and richening the slide. I think this is a later amal mk1 that has the screw in jet I will have to phone Hitchcocks to see what they supply. I am very familiar with the blocked body issues and checked this completely and ultrasonic cleaned body. Cheers for the help.

Unless there is repeated 'spitting' (lean) from the carb when the eng has warmed up, and giving a bit of throttle; dont fit a #3 slide.

IF there is 'spitting' at idle with NO throttle, the timing will be retarded some what.

If you have a pilot bushing, the #30 jet you fitted wont do anything: you need to check.

IF there is a removable screw-plug on the off-side from the Pilot air screw, you have a later body which should have a removable pilot jet.

If not, then you have the fixed bushing...

Had a look tonight the casting on the other side of the body to the pilot screw has a molding that almost looks like a sunk Allen head screw so I guess an early body so I need to remove the pilot jet again. It's so difficult when taking on a non running bike with no history as to why. The problem now is it starts first kick every time idles perfectly and runs beautifully on anything but a puff of throttle when it coughs and almost stalls especially when cold. When hot it improves but it still has that flat spot just as the throttle opens.Maybe a stay up float kit and a slight float height adjustment. It's soooo close. Cheers

Is a slight cough just off idle normal on these with the performance kit? Maybe I am chasing a feature lol

Thanks Paul I did put it in the ultrasonic cleaner but it has to come apart again so I will try the wire trick it's just I would rather not poke instead hope the ultrasonic did the job
