Hi all, whilst refitting my repaired rectifier bracket yesterday I noticed a problem. There's a long rubber hose from under the fuel tank, goes round the fuel pump and dissapears towards the rear of the bike. It's a one year old bike but this pipe is completely perished. It had come away from the tank too. Doesn't appear to be connected to anything at the other end. Is it just a vapour breather pipe please?

Uhm.. I may be stating the obvious here, but if it's there already, then it must have some purpose. I don't know what that purpose is, but someone thought it was necessary.


Replace it. No need to overthink it...


(Now I've said that, so someone will probably come along and say, 'don't bother, it's not critical, rip it off and throw it away...')

Yes, it's just an overflow pipe. As it might drip fuel if you're overenthusiastic with filling up I'd be inclined to replace it but ride the bike in the meanwhile. You'd think that India could at least produce decent rubber wouldn't you? Please don't anyone bother to say it's not rubber; it was a joke.......

Given the pennies a metre length of hose costs, just replace it. (There are rolls of various hoses at my local four candles/ fork handles emporium.)

One year old bike, which model?



I'm more than a little confused as, given the current models are all very similar, and I've have the tank off the Classic EFI-500 (2014/15) several times to get at wiring and found no extra hose; only the petrol hose to the injector (and the pump and level gauge wires).



Is this a CGT? If this is an overflow then it has to run down through the tank proper from the filler cap, and that sounds a bit complicated and over-thought by RE where the usual method is to splash excess over the top of the tank. Examine the tank.



Other thought is it may have been used as padding under the tank somehow to dampen vibration. A spare length of hose tucked in for purposes best known to the assembly-walla?

It's a 2015 classic, it's a small diameter hose, comes out the bottom on the tank above the rocker covers...wraps around the pump and dissapears rearwards. It's about 2 1/2 feet long. I chopped the perished bit off, reconnected it and ran it down the side of the battery.

Perhaps they found in India that a bike with full tank left on the side stand in 40 degrees C may start to relieve itself, so to speak..

An overflow tube located just under the height of the filler cap would at least direct the spillage away from the hot motor and electrics..

+1 what BarryEfi says; my 2015 C5 LE Despatch has the narrow bore overflow pipe. FWIW I used to own a BMW R850GS that would spew out fuel if brimmed on a hot day and left on its sidestand (usually on an Autoroute). Most entertaining. All the recent new bikes I've owned have the same arrangement so really it's just RE catching up. More likely an EU requirement than an Indian one. Slightly concerning that it has perished in one year; glad they don't supply the tyres then.
