Nicely put Frank. as it says on the tech note on this site [Wet Sumping] 2. don’t overfill the oil tank – the lubrication system ‘breathes’ more easily if the oil level is not too high. Good advice is to refill with about 2 litres of oil at an oil change (rather than 2.25 litres some recommend). Checking the oil level by placing the oil filler cap on the filler neck (not screwed down) and keep the oil level midway on the dipstick. (For your peace of mind, even with oil below the low mark there may still be enough oil in the system. That is not, however, a reason to allow the oil level to drop so low!)

Yes, I looked it up too. The "2.25 litres" refill is for the EFI-350 which also holds the same 2.75 litres total as the EFI-500/535. The older 350 takes nominal 1.5 litres. The various weirs in these engines prevents the level from appearing correctly until the pumps circulate the oil, so it can appear low when there's too much oil in. Nowhere does Reds mention a 1960 350 in this thread (like what I had); with separate primary and gearbox they take much less oil. Whatever Reds does have, and some folks have more than one bike, the same technique applies and can be adapted accordingly. I even asked Reds which bike ...

If anyone takes the trouble to look at the article in Tech Notes on this site about ‘wet sumping’ it is obvious from the photos that the engine it relates to is the older 350 and 500 non-unit machines – NOT EFIs! Stated oil capacity for EFI engines is 2.75 litres – (as stated in Service Manual page 02-6). For older type engines non-unit engine the capacity is 2 – 2.25 litres.

Boxerman - why so vitriolic against poor old Jefrs? He's only trying to help and as Reds doesn't actually state what bike he's talking about its not all that unreasonable to assume its the EFI ?? What we need on this message board is a bit of civility and politeness as the increase in rudeness and spiteful remarks is turning people away. Unlike Brexit/Remain, lets at least agree to disagree on here and treat each other with some respect . . . . please!

I do not often contribute to this board as I know that there are many people on here who are more knowledgeable about Enfields than I am.

I read all the posts though, and take notice of what people have said, if I do reply to a post, it will be relevant to that post, and not skewed round to talk about me and how clever/knowledgeable/skilled I am.

Because I pay attention to what others say, I know that Reds has a 1960 350 and a newly restored Model G , he told us the 'the book' said the oil capacity was 2.25 ltrs which is correct for a non unit Bullet.

Jeff's ramblings are usually harmless, but when he gives incorrect advice, which could damage a valuable bike because of his assumptions then I felt the need to say something.

Rather than admit that he was mistaken, he witters on again quoting erroneous 'facts' - if Reds was to take his advice he could probably ruin his engine.

I agree with you about civility and politeness, but when someone is so thick-skinned that he cannot accept that he is mistaken, then I feel that something has to be said.

Seems to me far too many assumptions were being made. Rounded up to the nearest pint,there are 4 pints in a 2.25 litre oil change. But are 4 pints really enough?

Whilst I'm here, can anybody tell me how much oil my mate needs in his bike when he does an oil and filter change?

ps I won't tell you the bike's continent of origin, how old it is, which model, how many cylinders it has, its capacity or if it has shim over or shim under bucket tappets until I've received at least several wrong answers and we've reached the 3rd page.

It seems to me that the lesson to take from this is always to quote what model you are discussing in the first post.
