Hi All,

I've finally got around to getting my early nineties bullet 500 back on the road after a decade in the shed. Previously I was running it on a boyer powerbox without a battery, but found that at tick-over you can't have the headlights and indicators working at the same time. No good at a junction at night! Sadly I can't remember which battery I need/will fit in the battery carrier. Any suggestions? Any other tips abouth things to look out for after so long moth-balled? I have started it up to keep the oil circulating periodically.

You could measure the battery tray and check against available replacements, OR use our hosts' on-line parts book for your model to identify the correct item.



Poor electrical output from the alternator could be due to the magnetism in the alternator rotor fading, it does happen. A new rotor or upgrading to one of our hosts' replacement alternators should restore output, assuming all your wiring connections are still good.

Would not bother about anything else, our 1992 Bullet will not run all the lights at tickover, been like that for donkeys years and probably for years to come

CBE / Aerospace 12 N5-3B 5Ah is standard for kick-start models. My lights stay on when idling.
I have modified the cover screw assembly after having problems with it coming undone a couple of times, leaving the battery dangling by the wires.

Nice screw mod but should there not be a retaining strap around the battery under the cover?

jefrs: Never had a retaining strap from new, no provision for one. Lost two cover screws and springs over the years. A cotter pin can be fitted on the end, belt and bracers. These critters are going nowhere.

That's a bit odd because acid batteries do not like being smacked about, I've seen the case split from rubbing. Is there no provision on the plate behind the battery or on the frame tube? Cable ties?

I've used a ruddy great thick rubber band to hold my battery after the original strap rotted away.

My lead/acid battery was tied in place with a length of baling twine.

You don't need to worry about Leon's battery it must be held in tight as it is upside down anyway......................................Australia
