Hi, new poster here. I had a look around & didn't want to seek attention by starting another boring thread about a problem loads most probably have had, so if I may I added to this thread.

I can eventually start my newly acquired Enfield on the kick-start, but it makes a whining noise, sounds like the starter motor will not disengage.

I'll tell you exactly what symptoms I'm getting if I may and would appreciate some pointers.

Electric start. Turns over but wont fire.

Kick-start. As the carb needs setting up, its hit and miss but will fire with a cleaned up plug.

Noise. When the engine runs it makes a whining noise that seems to be coming from the electric starter motor area. The whining rises in sync with the revs.

I'd love to know what it could be so I could either fix it myself or give it to a reputable mechanic who will know what it is, not one who would strip the whole bike and start replacing parts unnecessarily and racking a huge bill up, as I'm fairly spanner savvy, but specialist tools aren't in my box.

Many thanks.

aj, check the primary chain tension, it "sounds" like it may be too tight. If so the noise is caused by the engine and gearbox bearings objecting to the increased side load. And just a small thing, try not to "highjack" another persons post, send a new one with your problem, otherwise we will finish up with a mixture of answers to both problems!
