Hi Scalyback ,first of all sort the choke position out . fix the throttle so it is fully open Stick you finger in the intake of the carb there should be no obstruction with the choke fully open if you feel an obstruction it will be the choke slide so pull the lever so it lifts it completely to the top of the intake so you will not feel it .the lever on the handle bar if fitted properly should be pulled towards you so the cable it pulled tight if it is pulled tight and the choke is still not fully up in the intake then you will have to adjust the cable . that sorted . the heads and barrel on these engines are separate so the problem could be that on the blacken side it has worn valve guides or ring problem .. Before removing heads, barrel to check .change that plug on the rich side and the lead and cap also check if there is a large variation on the contact breaker gaps on each cylinder . last resort I can think of is on the advance and retard unit which has two small springs one of them could be broken or has come off or one or the weights has seized ?
Good Luck
