Well actually I bought aa home start recovery just for the very reason!

It was not cheap @90 quid odd. It's perfect for me the only caveat which I didn't realise is you have to pay extra for a garage > 10 miles! Which 99% of the time is ok for me! Oh well lesson learnt!

funkyorange, you are seriously puzzling me. Homestart is an add on to national breakdown recovery. How did you manage to just get homestart. I have been an AA member since 1972, and have never paid a penny piece extra for a recovery despite once breaking down over 200 miles away from home.

Phil, yes the more help the better please email me on Thestylelab at gmail dot com. I'm willing to give you some money for petrol and supply you with hot drinks and assist you in whatever you need.

Papasmurf - I got roadside recovery with just the home start package. There were other extras I didn't purchase. The deal is 10 miles any more it's 95 upgrade which gets you 50 miles then £2.50 on top per mile. Only one recovery is allowed. I rang them again To ask about a additional recovery and it was another £95 pounds And £2.50 per mile! I'm going with green flag or rac next time!

On insurance, I'm with Peter James who include free recovery from anywhere in Europe in their very good value policy. For most of us, Homestart isn't really necessary because if the bike won't start, you can usually use another one or the car, and fix it yourself. If you break down in the middle of nowhere however...

If it was piston or rings you would have heard it and the engine would have died a lot quicker than, "like it ran out of fuel". This is not definitive. Get it home and pull the head. You probably do need to examine the piston but if it ain't bust don't fix it; a failed head gasket will have oil everywhere and give you "low compression" simply due to leaking.

If the top of the piston is ok and the bore is not scratched up then piston and rings are probably ok and no need to remove the cylinder. Do change engine oil and filters and examine the used oil for metal, sieve it if necessary.

You will likely have turned what oil remains in the engine into black soup, so you want to flush that away with fresh oil.

If you don't feel confident doing the job (not everyone does) there are places that don't demand you sell a kidney to do what is a straight forwards simple job of swapping a head gasket. You will need a decent socket set and a torque wrench. For the parts give Hitchcocks a phone call and ask what's needed to do the job, probably a kit. Best of luck.
