Essential tools to carry on the bike? A few spanners and screwdriver to tighten stuff that falls off and to change bulbs. Cable ties, some bulbs and a spare plug because if you carry a spare spark plug you will never ever ever need it.

Or are you equipping a workshop or maybe starting a tool collection? I've had some 50+years collecting tools, some of which are so special I have no idea what they're for. One useful tool for wiring on the bike is an old leather football lacing tool.

Whitworth or metric ?

We get one very small tyre lever with the bike. I've never been able to do a tyre with less than three big irons, and never at the side of the road.

We also get half a dozen splayed round-end spanners which appear to be made of cheese, plus one of those double ended screwdrivers (Phillips and flat), there are no Pozidriv screws on anything mechanical. What is missing and needs to be carried is the C-spanner for altering the rear bouncers for pillion. There may be a couple of Allen heads on the bike.

The Workshop Manual, not to be confused with the owners handbook, lists all nut and bolt sizes at boring length, plus some special tools, pullers and such which one would only get as needed or take to the dealer's mechanic. I've discovered the C5 uses a 22mm spanner, nobody but nobody except RE uses 22mm because big spanners should be odd number sizes (13, 15, 17) and small ones even (12, 10, 8). Cunningly RE pair either end of nut 'n bolt as different sizes, 12/13, 14/15, 15/17 so you don't need two spanners of the same size. Law of something - the only 10mm combo spanner will go missing when you most need it.

I live in a metric country, so having a mix of metric and imperial nuts and bolt is just a drag. Whenever possible I substitute imperial with metric, even if I have to do new bolts or nuts myself. This way I can reduce the number of spanners. Another thing is, that most of the tools on the bike has at least two functions. Whatever happens on the road that requires a fix gives me an idea of what to carry with me when riding. If it can't be in the tool box either the tools are too big or the fix too complicated. These principles are sort of a guideline for my toolkit... Jacob

I have spanners, Thin pushrod spanners, box spanners, grease gun, spark plug gap gauge, and half a dozen hand tools that range from heavy 'shift it' type down to the 'getting the fallen screw out of there' types. tyre pressure gauge too.

Well this is the toolkit I use with my 1994 military 500 bullet.

I always try and bribe the bike if going on a ride out with others, but I sometimes forget that Tornado has different needs to myself.
