HI All,

Nearly every thread on modding Bullets are about trying to eke more performance out of one. I've currently got a 2007 Electra X which the previous owner has fitted our host's stage 1 kit, and pretty much a straight through exhaust. It's running rich, and I'm only getting 50MPG - an acquaintance with a similar setup (albeit a 29mm Amal, mine's 32mm) is getting 80.

I'll be seeing what I can do about the current settings, but (other than dropping in a Diesel engine or never going above 30mph) what setup would you go for improved economy? Original CV carb? Smaller Amal? Swap it for a 350?

Well my 2006 Electra X (ish) does 90mpg with no engine or exhaust modifications.

If you're prioritising economy over performance, you might want to take the bike back to its lean-burn configuration. This needs both an original 29mm CV Mikarb and the original style lean burn exhaust pipe, though you can still have a better silencer than the original monstrosity. Our hosts or some members here might have good used bits lying around, otherwise keep an eye on ebay for UK shed clearances.

With no modifications other than using an Iridium plug and BP Ultimate petrol, both of which make the bike run better, I get 110 mpg on a good run cruising 55-60mph ( indicated).

My 05 Electras with a Haywards highway kit fitted does 95-97mpg at a speedo 60 phone, and it's running very slightly rich. I still have the original carbon and silencer in the shed

Revband I very carefully check the fuel consumption on all motorcycles my wife and I own it is necessary for planning trips because petrol stations are like pubs over the last few years they have been closing at an alarming rate.
My wife and I always get good mpg, because we do not ride motorcycles like we stole them.


Elextra X(ish)90mpg, Suzuki VS800 Intruder 65mpg, CX500 and sidecar 46mpg (Loaded), K75S and sidecar 48mpg (Loaded). (It did 70mpg as a solo.)

I have no idea of my C5's consumption because I rarely record it - it's not that good. This is not because of its tuning, PCv, exhaust, filter and now Autotune but because I rarely get into top gear. The car however, a 2.2 turbo-diesel, has a "Stage 1" on it which produces a huge increase in power, something like +55% over stock according to the chaps that did it, so it drives more like a big petrol engine rather than a tractor, and yet it returns much improved fuel consumption because the engine is working more efficiently. I expect the same from the work on the bike. The bike runs far more smoothly now with an even wider power band.
