Hi all... I'm servicing the front brake for the first time after 31000 km (stubborn nut delay). The bearings are fine but does not run freely. I believe it has something to do with dried up grease. Should I just oil the bearings or is something more radical needed? And what to do about a very shiny brake drum? The brake pads have 3.6 mm of lining left so I just sanded the lining lifgtly to get rid of the shiny surface. Is 3.6 mm lining enough? Thanks for advice... Jacob

Your terminology is a somewhat ambiguous, are you referring to a disc or a drum brake?

As JTL mentions brake pads rather than brake shoes I think we're considering a disk brake here. A.

if the front wheel does not run freely, then strip and re-build from bearings up everything until it does.Brake drum will be shiny, make sure its not grooved

Bearings are pretty cheap.

IF it is a disc brake, it MAY be just be a stuck piston(s) caliper. IF this is due to the brake not being used for a long time, you MAY be able to free it off by tapping the caliper lightly with a hammer, using a bit of wood to protect the caliper from external damage.
