Just a point I thought of after reading Steve1's post. Have you just cleaned/washed the bike? If so check that the plug cap is dry along with the plug. Its easy for them to short out when wet. However that wouldn't stop the engine turning over with the starter, though you don't say if it is or not.

Hi all,

Thank you for the responses - I really do appreciate it.
I have responded to some of you below (hope you can follow this).

@ pd110961 Subject: New battery but engine not starting
Where are you, Mrs O.. one of us may be near and could help? was Harry running in the past in your ownership? - I live in Norwich, and yes Harry did run lovely until the battery failed and wouldn't take any more charge. Hence new battery. He has been sat in the garage undercover over winter. New battery recently bought :-) and I agree with you about it not being able to idle on the side stand, bit of a bind but it's okay, I can live with it.

@ neddy Subject: New battery but engine not starting
Was the bike Ok before the new battery, why was it changed?fitted ? - the bike was ok but battery failed and I replaced it.

So is the engine turning over at all Mrs O? If not, will it start or even fire on the kickstart? - the bike doesn't turn over at all and sadly it doesn't have a kick-start (it's a 2010 EFi, electric start).

I wanted to get him running then treat him to the full works wash, wax n polish the chrome :-/

UPDATE: On checking the spark plug, it seemed very sooty and the gap was almost non-existent.
Anyways, on checking the gap, the bloomin' thing broke! Arrgh!
It's a Bosch Super WR7DDC4 (twinspark jobby).
Would anyone know if I can put a NGK BPR6ES in its place or not.I have read mixed reviews on this thought.
If not I will order a Bosch one from here.

Oh yes, and all the fuses appear to be ok too!

SO for now he is back in the garage. I know he's due an MOT but I may have to 'bite the Bullet'as it were, and ask the garage to come get him and sort it.
It does have me puzzled though.

Thanks again.
Have a good evening.
Mrs O

If the engine won't spin over, have you replaced the battery with a good quality replacement? I had awful problems with my 2007 E/S, the new batteries I tried, all made in China, just did n't have the welly. This may be a simple case of getting what you payed for and having to pay out again for a top quality item.

Evening all :-)

Well I have bought a NGK spark plug as I am assured that these will do the job :-) went to unscrew the top to find I must have the only one with the top ceased on!!!! Ah well I'll get another tomorrow and make sure the top unscrews :-)

Thanks for the reply 'apparently lucky eddie'. I bought a decent battery for the bike, brand new, replacement of the one that was on the bike already and it is ok :-) thanks for the suggestion tho.

I have spoken with Hitchcock's tonight and they feel it may be the starter solenoid! I will have a tinker tomorrow and do as was suggested to see if the wires are crudely connected will the engine turn over? If so then it is the solenoid and I will have to get another one! It'll get there eventually :-)

I will keep you updated and post a picture when Harry is all better :-)

Night all and thank you.

Mrs O.

Ooops - sorry, Mrs O! I assumed you would tell us if the engine wasn't turning over.

I thought you meant it was turning over but wouldn't fire. If it won't actually turn over, you should ignore my advice about the spark and pay heed to what our colleagues have said.

Sorry for the confusion.
