Hi , Been having trouble getting a 1946 model co running, it was recommend that I have the magdyno overhauled, which I did at great expense. All back together now and still no joy, got a good fat spark and fuel in carb. Engine will start and stop almost right away. Have done timing a few times. Any other ideas guys.

As you have a good spark and it runs briefly, I would focus my attention on the carburettor and check for blocked jets.

A quick thought about the Good Spark: That can sometimes be the case with the plug out; but not back in the engine. I've had this, replaced it with a Brand New plug (Not just a cleaned-up one) and it was ok.

It's an easy one to try before doing anything else?
Good luck, Chris

Mart, the fact it is firing is encouraging. However we need to know a lot more about what you've done. Is the carb new and set up properly? What is your starting technique? Where are you setting the choke and advance retard levers when starting? And where are you, someone may be able to pop round or point you to your local Club Branch who might help?

This is an absolutely typical sign of insufficient enrichment.

I don't know anything about what carb you've got, but I'm sure the trouble will be there - more tickling needed, or maybe the idle jet is blocked. Something like that.

Hello Martman, I'd have a look at the hole in the tank cap, and see that the tank tap filters are clean ( experienced both). It seems the fuel comes to an erratic manner, so I'd look at that first. Hope it will help you Claude

Could be float height?

If Thack and others are right about fuel starvation and the bike has been left with fuel in the carb it may well be that there is ethanol contamination partly blocking the jets and passage ways. A thorough clean with solvent carb spray can work wonders.
