Hi, I have a 1946 model co. My question is , would it be worth putting a rubber breather pipe, which seals, on the end of the copper crankcase breather pipe.
I understand with the pipe sealing, maintains a vacuum in the crankcase.
What are the thoughts? Martman

Hello Martman,
That's what I did on my CO years ago. For me there are two problems with the original breather : the 2 small confetti that are supposed to seal it when the piston goes to TDC, and the poor diameter of the tube. So I made a new one, with a tube accepting the Bullet plastic breather pipe, but I kept the original "S" design of the pipe, and it still oils the rear chain.

Hi Claude, Good idea, I think I will do the same. Any tips on sealing the large rubber band on the chain case cover.

Hello Martman, The problem is that when you fit your rubber band, and press the outer chain case cover , the inner tends to flex, in the "banana" way.
I fit first the rubber band, sealed with silicone, to the rear chain case. then wait it is glued. And when I fit the outer one, I smear a bit of sealing paste on the outer side of the rubber band, to have some kind of lubrication that will help the fitting. In fact, I realised that the problem wasn't that the case was oil tight, but that the chain got some lubrication. So, I fitted an auxiliary small can with a tap(on the battery strap), connected to a drip feed inside the chain case, the kind you see on Norton Manx. So, when I ride, I regulary open the tap, and have my 6 oil drips per minute on the primary chain, and am sure it is correctly lubricated. The sealing problem is then avoided.

Still not very efficient...
Here is, at least, the link for a photo where you see an other mod I made : a kind of relay for the valve lifter. It is rather hard to fit the valve lifter cable in the cylinder, so the idea was to have a permanent one (hidden there by the cross), connected to a pivoting cross, that transmits the movement via an other cable, much easier disconectable.
