Well, all I can say is, they don't stretch.
That doesn't mean they don't get longer.
All the tiny bits of wear in the rollers adds up to a longer chain but the metal doesn't stretch.
When the wear in the pins/rollers gets excessive the rollers no longer coincide with the sprocket teeth and then the teeth start to wear quickly as well.
If you need a new chain then have a good look at the sprockets. Any appreciable wear on the teeth and it's new sprocket time or your new chain won't last long.
