Well, all I can say is, they don't stretch.
That doesn't mean they don't get longer.
All the tiny bits of wear in the rollers adds up to a longer chain but the metal doesn't stretch.
When the wear in the pins/rollers gets excessive the rollers no longer coincide with the sprocket teeth and then the teeth start to wear quickly as well.
If you need a new chain then have a good look at the sprockets. Any appreciable wear on the teeth and it's new sprocket time or your new chain won't last long.

Oh, and my 350 primary has done 20,0000 and I've adjusted it twice (first and second service). It gets checked and cleaned out now and again and it hasn't needed adjustment since. As far as I know it's an Indian one.

Thanks again one and all. I'll remove the cover to check this in that case. The chain has never been checked for adjustment before now, although I do check the level of the oil bath.

Apart from checking the oil, you should get in there every so often to clean the case out. It gets surprisingly mucky in there.
