Thanks everyone.

It wouldn't free rocking it in gear. Moves about 6" each way. It did move a bit when I rocked quite hard but didn't think it was a particularly good idea to keep doing so. It rolls with the clutch in still.

Worried this is gonna cost a fortune :-(

Sounds like you will have to take the outer primary case off to investigate. The piston maybe not going up or down because there is a lump of sprag clutch stuck between primary chain and engine pulley, thus stopping the crank from turning.
