hi, i have a 1948 model j, with a very good rear stand, problem is due to a very bad back i can not use it, my poor mates have to push my bikes on to the flat part of the road so i can get on, i bought a side stand that clamps over the frame, trouble is there is no room between frame and motor to put it on . i know i could weld it on but i dont want to make alterations on the bike, has any one ever used a block of wood or some thing and used it as a side stand,? any ideas? also has to be light to carry around, thanks, rick

There used to be a long steel rod with a flat disc welded near the bottom and it had a pointed tip; it is called a paddock stand I think, and it hinged down from the rear frame behind the seat, designed for parking on soft ground, the flat disc stopped the long rod from sinking any further into the ground. Mr Google might have a picture of one, mainly fitted to WW11 machines where the terrain was too rough for normal stands.

Leon, I re-fitted one of those on a G late last year, I have a feeling it had come from Hitchcocks, pretty sure the owner had fitted it on but the bike would lay over at 45 degrees or more. It was not just a case of making the leg longer I had to redesign all the mounting method on it but it now works well but it took many hours. And at the last months meeting there was not one drop of oil under it. Don't ask how long it took me to make a model G primary case oil tight

How about this type of sidestand? See www.vintele.co.uk It is a modern copy of the pre-War "Esway" type stand which was designed for rigid motorcycles. I have seen these new ones fitted to bikes at events like the Banbury Run and they are very well made. I saw an Owner demonstrate one and I was impressed with the ease of use and security of the stand when deployed.

Rick I also fitted an Indian sidestand to a WD a couple of years ago, it bolted on but I had to cut it right down because the WD only has about 5 inches of ground clearance
