hi.
i have a RS 39 switch which i am willing to swap....BUT ONLY FOR A U39-l15
the rs 39 i have is NOS [new old stock] i think.[very good condition if not] it came in a khaki headlight that i got with an late model ARIEL W/NG all in boxes...[a friend of mine got one exactly the same [as a spare] with a bsa wm20. thats why i think it's nos]

re the U39-L15 ......
these came out on most army bikes late 1944. [so not for long...very few made before the war ended]
these switches were mounted on the frame under the seat on the plate pictured above. [not in the headlight panel as other switches were] the headlight panel only had 1 push button. [no switch OR ammeter] as there was no ammeter there was no way to tell if the dynamo was working so to test if it was working the soldier would start the bike and turn switch to TEST [the dynamo d wire was connected to the TEST part of the switch and directly to the tail light] and the tail light would come on if the dynamo was working.
as for the rest of positions....
T was for tailight only [when in convoy] the same as RS 39
H was for headlight
when in H the push button in headlight panel would switch between pilot light and headlight main beam [no low beam]

[ you say
Only way so far that I have worked out how to have the tail and pilot lamps on with the headlamp off!]
on a normal U39 switch if wired correctly it should work like this.....
OFF = off
L = lights [pilot and tail only] [which is want you want ?]
H = headlight [headlight and tali only] there was a HIGH AND LOW BEAM switch on the handlebar
hope this helps.
P.S. if you can find a U39-L15 [there should be more over there than here ] [i'm in canberra australia]
and want to swap i will pay the postage charge BOTH WAYS..[OR IF ANYBODY HAS 1 TO SWAP OR SELL] PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
THANKS ALOT

I am corrected, Excellent!

A U39-L15 for an RS 39? Ooh! Both are goldust, and unfortunately, I don't have a U39-L15, or it would be in the post yesterday!

So U39 is OFF, L= pilot and tale, H = headlamp.

and T on the U39-L15 connected the dyno direct to the lights to show it was working.

Now, here's a question. Have been trying to work out a way to run the tail and pilots (connected on one terminal of my indian U39, without the headlamp.

I think I need to install a push button or switch in the wire between the 'U39' and the switch cluster, to turn the headlamp (High and Low) on and off. This would be between terminal 3 of the 'U39' and terminal 1 of the switch cluster (indicators H/L horn) this would not turn the pilots on, but rather, turn the headlamp off, when the lighting switch is in the H position, leaving the pilot and tail working when ignition in the park position

I unashamedly refer to the uk iron bullet wallchart (electrics explained and colour diagram)

Iron Bullet workshop wall chart

ANybody else got an idea for running the pilots and tale lamp without the headlamp in a 94 bullet ?

I just came across your post and if you still have the Lucas switch with the Off T/L/H I would be very interested. I am doing a restoration on a 1942 BSA m20 and need a few parts to make the bike more original and that is one. Am also looking for the black out tail light, and the Joseph Lucas Amperes gauge for the military bike if anyone may have come across one of them.
