Dennis, I didn't realise it was such a controversial issue :) I'm not going to fall out with anyone, those of us who have actually done the work and then put the miles on know what works! And what doesn't...

I use to pull the inner seal out, then I didn't bother, never had any gearbox failures either way, although I have a Super Meteor that still leaks a bit if left on the sidestand. I believe it has done about 10,000 miles since I rebuilt the box. It may be leaking around the outside of the bearing because most of these old English boxes require Loctite to hold the bearing in place and not fall out when you do a right hand turn which then bumps it out of first gear. Took me a while to work that one out

Hey Mark, don't get the wrong idea, I am not in any way saying you are wrong, only that both ways seem to work without any problem. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, sometimes the written word comes across differently to the spoken word.

Dennis, no offence taken, my reply was intended to be humourous, hence the little smiley thing which obviously didn't work! I've actually done both (1 seal and 2,) and they all seem fine. I do remove the inner seal on Twins, the gearbox mainshaft bearing is working pretty hard on these and I've seen a lot of damage caused by the bearing moving and the extra lubrication and cooling must help. I think most of the posters here are familiar with Bullets, the Twins do have their own challenges which need a bit more thought at times, that's why I put up Constellation Corner now and then!

I dont know if the 90117 kit is for Indian bullets but there is a difference in the mainshaft bearing size fitted at kickstart end, metric late india / redditch and early india imperial. Vince

Ok everyone,
So I ordered the new correct bearings for the gearbox. The big one went in fine, no issues. But when I went to put the small bearing in the inner cover it went in most of the way and then just stopped. I couldn't figure out why it was stuck. Then I noticed that the inner cover around the bearing on the gearbox side is cracked!!!!!
So my question is does the Indian inner cover work in place of the reddich one? Or do I need to get one from H?

Thanks again,
Damon

Hi, I hope you don't mind me hi-jaking this old thread but am struggling to get a good seal on my constellation gearbox. i bought a bearing and seal from hitchocks, i fitted the seal from the outside(presume this is correct) but it is so loose it just spins on the sprocket sleeve. should there be an obvious lip on the cases between the seal and the bearing as i wonder if the previous owner has been 'modifying' the gearbox.

could someone send me a sketch or post a sketch of how the seal and bearing should fit; yes i know this ounds stupid. also any advice on improvements would be really appreciated.

Am i the only one that can't seal the primary crank case with that o ring.

all help appreciated, sarcasm is always appreciated too :-) Neil
