I tried calling a vehicle locksmith who simply said "I wouldn't have a key for that" which I found extremely puzzling, I thought a locksmith would be able to do something without keys.

I didn't drill the centre of the lock to any great depth. I tried that technique with the toolkit cover and didn't have much success. Removing whatever retains the lock core seems to work and with lock sets being so cheap to replace it was the easiest way.

Most lock smiths now are like modern mechanics, they know very little.

It takes knowledge and practice and take far longer than a drill. Grab a set and a few old padlocks and a YouTube video or two and you will never be happy with your home security again.
