What's all this about earpiece jacks? The Tomtom works on a bluetooth connection to my headset. No leads involved.... I can pair it to my mobile phone too..


@ Papasmurf: The technology here is merely a pathfinder, a navigational aid, which means I can concentrate on the road. It hasn't fundamentally altered the bike...

As for seeing the screen or not, I don't care. As long I hear 'turn right in 400 metres' in my lughole, then I'm prepared... I rarely look at the screen.

Personally I won't have satnav in my car, or a mobile phone that is switched on.

My car has the satnav built into it and the iPhone connects automatically to the car by bluetooth. Hands-free operation, voice control, steering wheel controls and phone over car speakers and mic. Most of the time it's as much use as a chocolate teapot.



The mobile phone or bike satnav does have a decent map and is easier to use than pulling the 1/2-in Bartholomew out of your jacket's back map pocket.

My Garmin 660 can also connect to Bluetooth headset, it's just that I prefer to use my in-ear headphones plugged into the jack socket. I could pair the satnav to my iPhone to listen to my music but I prefer not to do so as invariably I ride faster with rock music playing and it takes away concentration. Re screen visibility I have a screen saver like you can fit to a mobile phone. It helps some, but after a few years of getting satnav on the cheap using a car one without means of getting sound I bit the bullet and bought a proper m/c one. Like Exile, I find that poor screen visibility is no longer an issue. As for doing without satnav in a car or my RE I live in the 21st century and travel abroad extensively (I have a trip planned on my C5). I like to find hotels en route and find it's much easier to do with a satnav. Same with petrol stations and loads of other things. Mine looks a bit like a bit of military kit on my LE despatch model anyway, not at all out of place. Satnav is one tool in the box, but for me it's one of the most useful.

..oh, and a proper bike satnav is waterproof.

Exile, bluetooth headset for helmet Amazon average price £65 . . . emergency services style ear piece with 2.5mm jack plug £2.50. The £62.50 balance has been converted into Leffe and very pleasant it was too.
