hi I have a thunderbird 350 which was owned by a member on here terry cooper was his name thunderbird 2 I'm needing to top up the oil but not sure which oil to use the oil is very clean but not sure what type of oil the previous owner used

I'm trying to contact him through facebook and ive posted on gumtree then it hit me I have his address of the new logbook that came today if I don't find by other means I will write to him I would change the oil myself but I'm not awfy mechanical minded but I have seen how its done on youtube ive never seen that way before you have to remove three oil plugs then the filter with washers cups etc

O no not the oil question, everyone has a favourite but here goes, this is an old style engine and will be better with a mineral oil, straight 30 in winter straight 40 in summer, or 20/50 all year, you don't need to worry about mixing oils just top up with whichever is your choice.

`What year and mark is it? Thunderbirds go from Classic,to AVL,Electra,To EFI?
my 2005 AVL is15/40 i think while as said 20/50 classic...enjoy

If you are only topping up, surely it won`t need more than half a cup / 250mls. It won`t do any harm whatever oil you use. These days, all oils mix .

And don't think it needs topping up if it's half way up the dipstick. That's about right.

thanks for the replies I used 20/50 in my 35 year old Honda cm 400 and that was ok now not having an enfield before correct me if I am wrong there are three bolts underneath do I loosen all of them to drain the oil or is there a sequence I suppose I will have to learn how to drain the oil I watched a youtube video the guy seemed to do it in sequence is that how it is done my dipstick is showing that the oil is a wee bit below the half way mark

Hi there, I hope you enjoy the Thunderbird,
Halfords Semi synthetic 15/40, oil and filter done very recently, so no need to top up, DO NOT TOP IT UP TO THE TOP OF THE STICK MARKINGS OR IT WILL BLOW UP THROUGH THE OIL FILTER.
Never fill it more than 2 ltrs.
This happened to the 1st person who bought it, he panicked and sold it quick thing big problems!
It came to me with less than 70 miles on it so I run it in properly so you should'nt have any problems with it.
Iridium plug to assist starting.
Did you get the high bars and other tank?
Got a full set of front wheel spokes to replace the rusty one if you are passing this way any time (Livingstone)
I only sold it because I have Ostio Arthritis and could not kick it over, so I bought an electric start 500, what a pile of crap that was, sold that quick and bought a Bonneville, the second love of my life.
