Vince, I think you may find Redditch Bullets had a roller and a ball bearing on the drive side; though you're right that early engines had drive side ball bearing, but they did have two on the drive side.

Hi vince ...yes I've thought of that and the engine sprocket nut is as you say much stronger, so this would be another factor in the total pros and cons of the design resulting in the ball race on the drive side...note though the Norton twin and Triumph twins do use just the relatively small nut on the timing side to hold the timing side bearing in situ and have a roller bearing on the drive....ATB..Les
