Hi Chaps...very nice to be writing here again. I'll keep it short
I need to remove the plain duplex sprocket magneto sprocket to remove the K2F Mag.
Have used new puller but this has pulled out from the centre threads of the sprocket....boy...this thing seems welded to the mag shaft. I now need to make up another legged puller, not easy to use as the chain cannot be removed....so here is my question: Has anyone else experienced this sprocket near welding itself on the shaft?....it just makes me feel better if I know the outcome of others on this task....let you know what happens in due course Oh yes I have tried heating it with a blowlamp and all the normal tricks...Les

Hi Les, Welcome back, No I have not had this problem, is it the threads on the extractor that have failed?, there are some very poor quality pattern tools around at the moment, it's probably best to find a good quality one if you can, to get a three leg puller in there is almost impossible and would probably destroy the chain and possibly damage the sprocket.

How does this website do this missing a paragraph of the post?, when you are tightening the extractor give the centre bolt a couple of sharp taps as you go.

Hi Dennis... nice to know you are still around too...and thanks for your reply. It seems that the threads within the sprocket have failed or perhaps a bit of both, (extractor too). It screws in but when I apply the pressure it just starts to pull out again...As you say, a two legged puller (noting that a 3 legged puller which won't pull squarely as the 3rd leg won't have the chain underneath it) will probably ruin the chain and might even distort the sprocket, but at worst they are available new and now I have to do and spend whatever it takes.... I've even thought of trying to drill the sprocket to use a puller where the legs are bolts and I can fit nuts behind the sprocket, but I reckon it's going to be extremely tough to drill...I did try tapping the centre bolt but no joy, but now useless as the extractor just pulls out....Oh dear this should be a simple thing but I have to spend quite a lot of time I reckon. BTW...what makes it worse is that the shaft end is deeper than the sprocket edges so my other legged extractors run out of thread before pressure is created...Let you know how I proceed...ATB....Les

Oh forgot to mention, I might make up a heavy claw assembly to fit to the end of a slide hammer...the shock from this might be better at jerking the sprocket loose...who knows...Les

Hi Les, long time no hear, where have you been? If the internal thread has pulled out you'll have to use a sprocket puller as you say. I have a universal puller which has shouldered legs designed to fit either side of a sprocket tooth, it works well and your idea of a bolt head behind would copy this. I think I might consider cutting the chain off to get better access, a new chain is cheap enough and there is a risk of breaking off the magneto extension of the crankcase. I have just acquired a basket case Connie which has been knackered in just this way!

Hi Mark nice to hear from you too...As for my absence I've been dabbling with some other marques apart from having loads of work to do on another house I moved too (still have) As for the Connie, I've always loved the looks of them and so now have one but only want to get it running to start with and do a complete refurb later hence the reticence of doing more than I need to at this stage (K2F Dead) I once had a Super Meteor about 40 odd years ago which impressed me. Anyway...you have confirmed one of my fears by saying the timing case extension can snap off, yes I have noticed how the smallest pressure has it flapping around so I'd better be careful!...As said I wanted just to remove the mag with the least amount of stripping down so please tell me...can I remove the mag chain without taking off the main timing chain and its sprockets?....it looks as if I do....ah... just noticed you said cut the chain off, a good idea... I'll get some bolt cutters then... Will be a few days before I can come up with a different puller and find some time to return to doing it....BTW...Question: do these Connie mag sprockets generally pull off without too much fuss?.... on other bikes it is simple....or have I just got the exception?...Cheers Mark....Les

Just coming back on the slide hammer idea I mentioned above...I don't think I'll try that as it has occurred to me I would be thumping the mag's drive side bearing and I don't want to crack or distort anything on the mag end...and the inherent weak timing side mag extension would also be taking a thumping........Les

Les, the sprocket can be fearfully tight, I've known them extract with a real bang. Not as much as the flywheel on a big motor I did once which left the two of us with ears ringing for an hour but still, quite a pop!

Hi, Les,
Try removing the camshaft sprocket and the chain will come off.
I had similar problems with the puller running out of thread, refit the mag nut but leave it a few threads loose then put a packing piece of metal on the nut to take up the distance ideally countersunk to help the puller centralise . get the puller as tight as possible and give it a tap, the shock should remove it. be careful with any sideways thrust as the armature can break in half.
