Mark I'm pleased you have a clear head today (wish I had).

The plot thickens, I have just been down to my garage and my original Royal Enfield (very tatty) workshop manual for the 700 and 500 from 1954 shows the 700 Meteor with the wrap round stay and brackets fitted, I can't find a print date but it states 1954 on.

Christmas cheer to you all. It is a 1954 Meteor 700, the parts are listed by Hitchcoks as the part numbers I have given, I cannot find mention in my "Genuine" original Royal Enfield "Meteor Minor" Standard and de Luxe workshop manual.As someone posted a "Photo" would make sense as interpretation in my case is open to confusion. Roger, the Meteor Minor is a completely different animal no wonder you are confused! Get the proper book from our Hosts, order number PB0754, that should illuminate the situation. Dennis, I think I found the manual you mentioned, it says "front stand if fitted" after a long list of other models as well as the Meteor. However there is no illustration, the only fork pics being of the early type. I still think that this type of stand wasn't fitted to the 53-55 Meteors. It isn't in any of the Parts Books even as an option. I have owned a 53 Meteor for over 20 years and seen many more, none with this stay/stand.

Thanks for that but as the parts came with the bike (but not on the bike) I am intrigued to know where they are fitted.

Hi Roger, take look at the rear stay on your front mudguard if your bike has two separate stays left and right then it does not use these brackets if it has one continuous stay which wraps around the outside of the mudguard fixed with one central bolt to the mudguard then it is possible you can fit them.

Hi All

A few years back I had a problem with that same front stand fitted to my 1959 Airflow Constellation which had the proper Airflow pipes.
When making a heavy front brake application causing compression of the fork, the stand securing nut/spring fouled the siamese pipe joint clamping nut causing the steering to lock up and consequently resulted in my wife and me nearly falling off!

It happened at the bottom of the Buttertubs Pass in the Lake District approaching a "T" junction, fortunately the approaching car driver saw that I was having problems and stopped short of the junction allowing me to career through without stopping, I had to release the brake to regain control!
On another occasion when exiting a petrol station it locked up and I did drop the bike, fortunately without any damage
These losses of control were a mystery for some time until an old hand saw it happen and worked it out.
