Re those adjustable girder spanners - Dad worked for GEC-Satchwells/Elliot-Automation, consequently most of his tools (bought from their 'tool club' at one shilling per week, they owned their own tools) were Elliot-Lucas, and I've inherited them. They make supremely good steel bending tools. Sizes for spanners are Whitworth/BSW, BSF, BSB, BSPP, BSPT, NTP, UNC, UNF, WTF, metric and mole wrench.

Jefrs, my family were chair bodgers using pole lathes for hundreds of years. One of my uncles was the last one doing so commercially. My father was chair bodger until he was "commandeered" in the war to make wooden parts for the Mosquito fighter bomber.
As for using eyesight and not measuring instruments he made a lot of wing tip for Mosquitos and the inspection department threw a wobbly because he has been measuring them by hand and by eye.
After a lot of fuss they were all passed for use because they were all OK when measured by the inspection.
It is why I get a tad annoyed when people use the word bodge, when they mean botched.
