Frank is correct - the dealer doesn't have a reg number until after the vehicle is registered. Dealers are usually given a suite of numbers to allocate. The also want to keep the bike as new as possible, if they register it e.g. as a demo then the sale becomes a second hand bike. So registration won't happen until the last minute and money changes hands. Once it is allocated and on the system you can insure it and the dealer can register it in your name and deliver the bike to you. It sounds complicated but it's not.

this is my first ever new bike (or car)... at the tender age of 54 I've managed to pay off the mortgage so don't feel so guilty. I've always had bikes about 6 years old or more (sometimes much more), same with cars. It horrifies me to think I'd buy a £12k car and it be worth £7K after just one year. I've taken ford diesels to 1/4 million miles without too many problems.

I prefer to buy new vehicles (bikes and car) then keep them for years. To me the steep depreciation in the first few years is offset by the pleasure of owning a new vehicle that nobody has mistreated, or failed to run in properly (less of an issue these days with most vehicles). The exception to this (obviously) is buying a proper classic; though here too I keep them for ages. If everyone bought a used vehicle the system would collapse......

up till now I've always bought 2nd hand.. to be honest I've always been hunting for the 'perfect' bike, but my aims to perfection have moved as I grew older. I was never really into race reps stuff, although I did have 2 VFR's. Then I dreamed of a Bonnie for a few years, got an insurance pay out and bought the 2002 Bonnie T100 5 years ago. It still in the garage, and probably a keeper? I do like the new T120 water cooled ones though, so perhaps in 5 years when they have come down in price on the 2nd hand market I may consider a swap. the Enfield was a progression really.. the Bonnie was running fine, the Suzy Burgman 400 was a good commuter and I wanted a project, so bought a Bantam 175. that was fun, but the Mrs likes to come out with me most if the time, and the bantam had neither the power nor the brakes for 2 up work. So.. we sold it and got the enfield. We never anticipated loving it so much! so.. here we are.. the burgman got swapped for a Honda INNOVA 125 (its only duty is 100 miles a week commute from spring to autumn, which it does well at 125mpg.
