Not ignoring the astronomical RE naming convention, when the RE Meteor first went into production, the upgraded Gloster Meteor was breaking air-speed (616mph!) and altitude records in the early 50s. I doubt that was a coincidence, we also have Fury (Hawker), Lightning (EE), Thunderbolt (P-47) and which was the original name-to-be of the Gloster Meteor.
