Hee hee! And pre- the pre-Monobloc there was the 75, 76, etc etc! Something else occured to me, the pilot circuit on these breathes through the removable jet block on these carbs and is tiny and very easily blocked. I have had quite a bit of experience of these and Paul's suggestion of shocking obstructions out is a good one but it usually works best with Monoblocs for some reason, the pre-Mono being quite resistant. Unfortunately!

Hi Mark - you have just reminded me - the 289 'Pre Monobloc' on my 1955 500 Bullet was giving trouble when I first had the engine running after rebuilding the bike. There didn't appear to be any passageway drilled for a pilot circuit in the jet block, just a shallow hole of about 2mm diameter coming to a dead end about 3mm inwards. I asked Surrey Cycles if there was meant to be a tiny hole through there and was told 'of course there should be'. With that I drilled through and made the passageway myself - it had never been drilled, so this machine [or whichever machine used this carb originally] could never have started or idled very well at all! The only problem was my smallest drill was too large and the idle was far too rich, but I sorted this by inserting a small length of gas welding rod into this oversize hole, to get it just right - more by luck than judgement! Cheers, Paul.

Hi Barry, one of the 'Pre Monoblocs' was known as the 'Standard' - I don't know which generation that was, though. Cheers, Paul.
